CASP India - Community Aid and Sponsorship Program

CASP collaborates with many National and International development agencies in the pursuit of its projects, sharing skills and resources in order to give children and communities opportunities for betterment of their lives .


PLAN International (India) : Founded in England in 1937 to provide emotional and material support to orphans of the Spanish Civil War, PLAN, as it is known, is a non-profit, non-sectarian agency, that today helps 13,00,000 children with their families and communities in 46 developing countries. The CASP-PLAN alliance was forged in 1979, the International Year of the Child. This alliance has completed 30 years in 2009 and an year long event will be flagged of on 22nd September 2009 at Delhi which is proposed to be the “International Day of the Girl Child”. A 12 month campaign of activities will be conducted involving partner organizations. Various key messages, promoting the power of children and communities as agents of change in community development will be exhibited. Success (big & small) will be disseminated

CASP-PLAN Projects around the country focus on child development through sponsorship, an important aspect of which is building relationships between foster families and parents through communication. Their wider programme includes in its agenda, Child Survival and Early Childhood Care and Development; Children's Rights and Education; Life Skills and Leadership Training for Adolescents, Reproductive Health, Household Security and Sustainable Community Development. Plan International and CASP carry out activities in the area of Madanpur Khadar and Badarpur in Delhi. The activities carried out are mentioned under CASP Plan Delhi. 

AC International Child Support, Denmark : AC International Child Support, Denmark provides sponsorship to 576 children. It also gives development fund for all the sponsored children. The development fund is meant for medical insurance, school fees of the sibilings, training and development programmes for children and their families, crisis situation in the sponsored child's family, and meritorious students. AC International Child Support, Denmark also helps by giving donation for the Sr. Citizen's Day Care Centre in Mumbai. An Emergency Fund is also provided by the organization for assisting children and families affected by natural calamities (floods / earthquake / medical emergencies etc.)

TDH Denmark : TDH Denmark in association with the Rajagiri Disaster Management Cell continues to sponsor 297 children affected by the Tsunami. 386 Orphan and disadvantaged children are also supporting children from the earthquake affected area in Rapar & Bachau as well as 70 children of convicts from the Tihar Jail in New Delhi. In the general sponsorship programme 201 children are given support at Delhi , Mumbai, Pune units of CASP and from the Rajagiri Outreach Project at Kerala.

Foster Care Scheme (Bal Sangopan Yojana) : Govt. of Maharashtra under the Foster Care Project Scheme has sanctioned grants to CASP Mumbai and CASP Pune for total number of 1000 children. The children are between age group of 7 to 18. The eligible children for the Foster Care Project are orphans, destitute, children of unwedded mother, children of the parents of life imprisonment, leprosy infected, child labour etc.

CASP has been taking a proactive role in this Foster Care Project by various ways for the development of the deprived children and trying to give them a better profile by implementing the following :-

•  Medical Check-up of all the children.
•  Medical Check up of the mothers of the children
•  Routine medicines for common ailments and iron and calcium and de-worming tablets are provided.
•  Workshop organized to give proper and connect for children and the parents along with the benefits provided by the Govt. of Maharashtra.


CASP Mumbai : Sponsor children receiving grant in aid under the Foster Care Scheme

Enfant Du Monde, France : CASP runs 3 day care centers (Balwadis) in the villages Gorthan, Narangi and Shirki in Raigad District with the help of Enfant-Du-Monde , France . Eighty two children benefit from the program and are provided with nutritious food and education aid including uniforms and study material. Various recreational activities like picnics, sports day and festival celebrations are organized at the centers. Multiple training workshops are organized for teachers to enhance their knowledge of child psychology and equip them with improved skills to care for children. 270 children are also sponsored under the general sponsorship programme from Mumbai, Delhi, Kerala, Pune and Raigad units by Enfant-Du-Monde, France.

K.C. Mahindra Education Trust, Mumbai : CASP in association with the K.C. Mahindra Education Trust provides development opportunities to young girls in the age group of 3-8 years through the project “Nanhi Kalis” (meaning little buds). The project is in operation since 1999, providing sponsorship to 200 girls from primary and secondary schools in Mumbai and 43 girls in Delhi Unit. 57 girls (Children of convicts from Tihar Jail-Delhi) are also provided with development opportunities through sponsorship.

GIVE India Foundation : CASP is listed on GIVE India Foundation. This listing has initiated 28 new sponsorships. The GIVE India foundation platform has given a larger base on the web for CASP and this has promoted the programmes of CASP the world over.

ESSAR Group : The ESSAR Group has joined hands with CASP for promoting the sponsorships and related activities for the girl child.

63 girl children will be sponsored for the year 2009-2010 and a separate project for the girl child is being initiated in Mumbai for donations received from Essarites. Both these projects will be carried out by CASP Mumbai Unit.

HIV/AIDS INITIATIVES OF CASP IN INDIA

1. AVERT Project of CASP in Mumbai : 2003 to 2008
CASP with support from AVERT society is implementing the Targeted Intervention Project since 2003 with the slum population in Goregaon-East, Mumbai. During the 5 years of its operation the project has reached a population of 80235 and has a good rapport with the community. From January 2008 the project has focused on migrant population and has approached migrants from industries, construction sites and hotels as well as owners of stables. The project has one to one interaction as well as group interaction and also promotes condom usage. Peer educators are from the community and help in identifying people with STI/HIV and other sexual health problems. Identified STI persons are provided counseling and are motivated for treatment. Partner treatments are also promoted. Project conducts trainings and regular meetings for secondary stake holders in the community and sensitizes them on issues i.e. STI/HIV and AIDS. Since the year 2000 through this programme the activities conducted are condom promotion, STI care, enabling environment and BCC. CBO's are actively involved to achieve the objectives of the project. The project has a network with 25 Govt. and Non. Govt. offices to obtain various services. 65 doctors are supporting the project on the aspect of prevention.

2. A new project has been grated to CASP by AVERT Society at Bhaindar in Mumbai for Targeted Interventions for 10000 Migrant Workers from 1 st May 2009 to 30 th April 2010.under the NACP III supported by USAID.

3. PCI project for supporting infected children and initiating ART for them through Clinton Foundation at Mumbai & Pune. (Pediatric Aids Initiative-PAI)- July 2007 onwards.
In Mumbai CASP is working with 37 children in the age group of 0 to 15 years in the area of Worli Koliwada, Worli, and Andheri onwards to Palghar and providing them ART and Nutrition. Identification of the children is done through Govt. / Private Hospitals , NGO's. Through this programme CLHA's are provided treatment, care and support, psycho social support, nutritional support. Counseling and follow up is done on a regular basis. Prevention of HIV infection to new born is done through PPTCT program scale-up. DNA-PCR testing for children in the age group of 0 to 18 months is also a part of care and treatment. CASP Plan Pune is working with 34 children and providing them treatment for ART, care and support and also provides psycho social support services to CLHA's and their families. The geographical areas covered are Taluka's of Maval, Mulshi and Velha from Pune district.


3. Global Fund Round VI at Pune :- July 2007 onwards.
The objective of this programme is to improve care and support services to children living with HIV AIDS (CLHA's) and children affected by HIV AIDS (CAA) and enable interventions which keep them with their parents or extended families. 182 CAA and CLHA are identified. Out of these 48 male and 49 female children are registered under CHAHA project. The project identifies and registers suspected cases and provides referral services, health and medical care, educational support, alternative care and psyological support, nutritional and household support. The project networks with GO's and NGO's.

4. Support group of PLHA's (Navjivan Seva Santha-NSS ) :- 2005 onwards
CASP Plan has promoted NSS as a CBO which is devoted to the welfare of PLHA's for prevention of HIV /AIDs. They disseminate scientific and correct knowledge about HIV/AIDS. One of their major objective is to develop adequate care and support system at the block level and in due course at the level of the primary health centre and also to develop block level network of support groups of PLHA's of GO's & NGO's and connect it with district and State Level Networks. This group will protect the rights of children living with HIV/AIDS, and affected by HIV/AIDS and also create awareness to reduce stigmatization, and increase the level of acceptance of PLHA's by the communities.

Rajagiri Outreach Project :
Rajagiri College of Social Sciences :- Rajagiri College of Social Sciences is an educational set-up at village Kalamassery, about 30 kms away from Kochi International airport in the state of Kerala. The college mainly conducts graduate and postgraduate courses in the area of social sciences and social welfare development. In addition as a parallel activity Rajagiri College of Social Sciences decided to implement joint project activities and as such started sponsorship programme activity jointly with CASP.

Rajagiri Outreach Project in association with Rajagiri Disaster Management Cell and TDH Denmark has undertaken child sponsorship programme for the children affected by Tsunami waves at Arattupuzha, Chellanam, Edavanakkadu, Elamkunnapuzha and Pallipuram Grama Panchayats in Kerala. Altogether 390 children are taken care under the scheme. In 2006-07 and 2007-2008 the children received study materials like uniform, books etc and also table and chair. The various programmes of CASP at Rajagiri Outreach are being successfully implemented in the Tsunami affected areas also under CASP guidance and support. Souhrudam camps organized in the areas during the school vacation were a wonderful experience for the children and youth.


Programmes for HIV Affected Children
In association with a NGO Global Kerala Initiative ( Keraleeyam), Rajagiri Outreach is M onitoring the sponsorship programme for HIV infected children in Kerala. 103 children living with HIV across the state and Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu are supported through this project. A Situation Analysis of children affected by HIV/AIDS in Kerala is completed with the support of UNICEF.
