Demise of Dr Sharadchandra Gokhale
Internationally renowned social scientist and former editor of Kesari newspaper and founder president of many social organisations, Dr Sharadchandra Gokhale expired due to a heart attack.
He took forward the legacy of his father, Late Baburao Gokhale, editor of Kesari, and completed his Masters degree in Social Welfare from Tata Institute of Social Sciences. He worked for the Dept of Social Welfare, Govt of Maharashtra for many years. Subsequently he established Community Aid and Sponsorship Programme, International Leprosy Union and International Longevity Centre-India. Thus for a long time he focussed on the welfare of children, individuals affected by leprosy and senior citizens. During his long career in social welfare Dr Gokhale represented India in organisations like the United Nations, World Health Organisation and in many international fora. He was felicitated with the Jeevan Gaurav Puraskar of Pune Municipal Corporation, JD Birla International Award and the Sasakawa Award of WHO. Recently he was specially felicitated by Praj Foundation with the Praj Maha-entrepreneur Award.
Dr Gokhale leaves behind his wife, son (famous orthopaedic surgeon Dr Sanjeev Gokhale), daughter, daughter in law, son in law, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dr Gokhale authored more than thirty books, on child welfare, social work and spirituality.
